If I mispronounce your name because it is foreign to my tongue, correct me.

I don’t purposefully allow the accents of your name to fall flat on my tongue like the European English demands or the language to sound chopped and misheard.

If I don’t say your name correctly, don’t shrug and say it’s ok because people have been doing it all your life. Your mother worked hard to name you that name, with all its syllables and apostrophes and hyphens and inflection.

I don’t want to disrespect your heritage, your culture, your great grandmother or grandfather and their struggle.

If I mispronounce your name, forgive me, but don’t let it happen again. Make sure everyone knows your name.

of course like any social tip this doesn’t always work but here’s something i’ve found useful when requesting accommodations: present it as a simple fact. like, i am explaining to you how this is going to go.

that way, if they do have objections or need to negotiate something, they can let you know, but they are less likely to just reflexively raise obstacles than if you frame it as a request.

eg someone replies to your email saying they’ll call you but you can’t talk on the phone. you could say, “i am not able to make phone calls for disability reasons. could we continue this discussion via email please?”

but i have found that if you ask, often they will say no and try to insist you do the thing you just said you can’t.

so what i do instead is something like “i am not able to make phone calls for disability reasons but i would be happy to answer further questions via email.”

there is nothing in this statement for them to say no to. you haven’t asked permission, you have simply told them how communicating with you works. and in my experience, often people will just roll with it.

“I will not be able to work on these dates due to the fact that I will not be in town” is how I started to frame my time off requests when I worked in the service industry and man did it smooth out a lot of things that would have been fights otherwise

Honestly, this!!! I had an ASSHOLE of a boss a few years ago. I’d worked for the business for 7 years before I left, was the most senior staff, and still t paid and treated like shit. About halfway through that 7 years, I just started telling him when I wouldn’t be there. “Hey, I bought a ticket to Ireland, I’ll be gone for June.” Now, that long is a little risky, but I know he couldn’t afford to fire me. Use that to your advantage. But being blunt and firm is what works, especially if you’re a woman, femme, or sometimes even a Queer man (this was my case and it was used against me).

A few months ago I mentioned to my friend that she should buy her boyfriend flowers because more men should get flowers from their partner and she did it today and apparently he was shaking from excitement and emotions because he’s never recieved flowers before.
